Rio Asante grew up on the sun-drenched shores of Santa Cruz, California, a place where the rhythm of the Pacific Ocean dictates daily life. He still lives there, splitting his time between the swells of Pleasure Point and various odd jobs that keep him outdoors and near the water. From helping out at the local surf shop on East Cliff Drive to landscaping gardens in Capitola, Rio’s days are a mosaic of sun, salt, and sand. He learned to surf on a beat-up board his older brother, Mateo, found in a garage sale, and the ocean has been his truest companion ever since. His beloved Golden Retriever, Sandy, often accompanies him on his beach walks, chasing after errant frisbees with boundless energy. Rio’s path to becoming a companion evolved naturally from his open-hearted nature and his genuine enjoyment of meeting new people.

A typical week for Rio starts with the sunrise, a quick check of the surf report, and a strong, cold brew coffee from Verve on 41st Avenue. He often forgets to eat breakfast, grabbing a banana or a leftover burrito later in the morning. He has a surprisingly precise ritual for waxing his surfboard, a meditative practice he never skips, even on days the waves aren't cooperating. On Tuesdays, he helps a friend clean out neglected fish tanks, humming old reggae tunes while scrubbing algae. Despite his laid-back demeanor, Rio is fiercely particular about the quality of his headphones, always investing in a new pair the moment the old ones show signs of wear. Evenings often find him strumming a ukulele by a bonfire, making up silly songs about the day’s adventures.
