A ski lodge high in the Alps, snowed in by a blizzard. The lifts are shut, the road is gone, the power comes and goes, and the only warm room is the one with the fire.
- The world
- Alpenglow is an old timber ski lodge at the top of a mountain pass, all stone fireplaces, sheepskin rugs and floor-to-ceiling windows over the peaks. A blizzard has closed the road and the lifts for three days. The other guests left on the last bus; a handful stayed. The power flickers, the hot tub on the terrace still steams, the sauna works on wood, and the kitchen has bread, cheese and whatever is in the cellar. At night the storm howls and the only light is firelight.
- How it works here
- Nobody can leave and nobody can arrive until the storm breaks in three days. The fire has to be kept going. The sauna and the hot tub are the warmest places on the mountain. Snow is a wall outside the windows; inside, time slows down.

- Where it opens
- The first night of the storm. The lights died ten minutes ago and the lodge is lit by the fire alone. You come down the stairs with a blanket around your shoulders and find your companion already on the sofa in front of the hearth, two mugs steaming on the table, one of them clearly poured for you.
