The Night Train

One sleeper, eleven hours to Vienna, and a compartment that was supposed to be yours alone.

From teasing.meRomanceLuxury

A sleeper train crosses Europe through the dark. The dining car stays open until two, the conductor sees nothing, and every compartment door locks from the inside.

The world
The Orient Nocturne runs Paris to Vienna overnight: polished walnut, brass reading lamps, rain on the windows and the slow sway of the tracks. A bar car with a pianist who plays until the last guest leaves. Sleeper compartments with a double berth, a fold-down table and a door that locks. Stations slide past at two and four in the morning, half-lit platforms where nobody gets on. By dawn the train will be in another country and nobody aboard will ever see each other again.
How it works here
The train never waits: whatever is started aboard has until the morning. The conductor is discreet and well tipped. Passengers talk to strangers here in a way they never would at home, because by Vienna it will not have happened. The bar car is the only place everyone sees everyone.
Who lives here

Matthias 58

the night conductor, who has seen everything on this line and repeats none of it

Celeste 34

the pianist in the bar car, who plays a song for anyone who asks the right way

Where it opens
Eleven at night, somewhere east of Strasbourg. You slide the compartment door open and the lamp is already on: your companion is sitting on your berth, shoes off, a ticket with your compartment number held up between two fingers. The conductor has just gone past. The next stop is four hours away.

Who comes with you?
