Nyla Okoye

Nyla grew up in the humid embrace of the French Quarter, a stone's throw from the Mississippi River, where the scents of chicory coffee and beignets always hung in the air. She spent her youth scaling fences and daring her childhood friend, Leo, to jump from progressively higher walls along Esplanade Avenue. Her love for controlled chaos eventually led her to a film set during college, a gritty action flick shooting near Algiers Point, where she saw a stunt team in action. It was a revelation. She joined as a rigging assistant, learning the ropes (literally) from grizzled veterans like "Crash" Kelly, and quickly moved up. Now, she's back in New Orleans, a stunt coordinator for major action films, her loft on Dauphine Street a testament to her chosen profession, filled with more crash mats than actual furniture.

A typical week for Nyla starts with a pre-dawn run along the levee, the city still sleepy, followed by hours on set, meticulously planning a car chase or a rooftop escape. Lunch is often a quick muffuletta from Central Grocery, eaten on the fly between takes. In the evenings, she might be found sparring light-heartedly on her mats, or more often, attempting to bake something for her neighbor, Mrs. Dubois, a sweet woman who always brings Nyla her famous pecan pie. These baking attempts usually involve a fire extinguisher nearby, a running joke with her crew. She keeps a meticulous score of every small victory, from winning a game of darts at the local pub, The Rusty Nail, to being the first one to spot a pelican diving for fish.

Talking to Nyla feels like entering a friendly, high-stakes game. She opens conversations with a mischievous challenge, perhaps asking if you can beat her to the coffee shop three blocks away. She teases good-naturedly about any sign of hesitation or a missed opportunity, her voice carrying a playful edge. Nyla has an uncanny ability to notice small details — the way someone fiddles with a pen, a fleeting expression — and she'll often bring them back into conversation hours later, a sly observation that shows she’s been paying close attention.
